Obituary:
Mr. John Counts, Jr., son of the late Mr. John Counts, Sr., and the late Mrs. Carrie Lane Counts, was born August 22, 1906, in the Pomaria section of Newberry. He departed this earthly life and entered into Eternal Rest on Friday, June 25, 2004, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
He was a member of St. Mark A.M.E. Church and recently held positions as Father of the church and Steward Emeritus, after more than 60 years of dedicated service to the church. He served as the Senior Choir Leader for many years, founder of The Jubilee Choir and Pastor’s Steward for many years. He was also a member of the Solid Rock Masonic Lodge #243 and the Sons of Aid Society #46.
Mr. Counts was married to the late Mrs. Agnes Suber Counts and to this union six children were born.
His daughter, Carrie Counts Flemon, three sons, John Counts, III, Eddie O’Neal Counts and Henry Archie Counts, two brothers, Mr. Henry Counts and Mr. Neal Counts and two sisters, Miss Ola Mae Counts and Mrs. Emma Counts Sims, also preceded him to Heaven.
Those celebrating his life and cherishing precious and loving memories include two daughters, Mrs. Fannie Mae (Homer) Cannon of Chapin, SC, and Mrs. Elizabeth C. (Rev. Derry) Rutherford of Columbia, SC; one sister- in-law, Mrs. Annie Laura Sims of Pomaria, SC; one brother-in-law, Mr. James (Thomasina) Suber of Newberry, SC; 22 grandchildren; two step- grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
